Warriors of Waterdeep
Turn-based mobile dungeon raids
Warriors of Waterdeep was a free-to-play mobile game released by Ludia in 2019, bringing Dungeons & Dragons branding to iOS and Android as a turn-based tactical combat game. Despite the setting, it ran on its own streamlined rules rather than the tabletop d20 system.
Gameplay
Players assembled a party of four heroes and battled through waves of monsters in short, turn-based skirmishes, choosing each character’s actions from a small set of attacks and abilities. In keeping with the free-to-play hero-collector model, progression centered on recruiting new champions and upgrading their gear and powers, with energy timers and in-app purchases pacing how quickly a roster could grow.
Live service and sunset
Launched in May 2019 to a mixed reception — praised for its approachable tactics, dinged for the usual free-to-play grind and monetization — Warriors of Waterdeep ran as a live-service title for several years before Ludia closed its servers in December 2022. As an always-online game, it became unplayable once those servers went dark.
