A return to Faerûn, twenty-three years later

After more than two decades, the Baldur’s Gate series returned in 2023 — this time helmed by Larian Studios, fresh off the success of Divinity: Original Sin 2. Baldur’s Gate 3 is a party-based CRPG that adapts the 5th edition of Dungeons & Dragons into a sprawling, choice-driven adventure spanning the Sword Coast, the Underdark, and the city of Baldur’s Gate itself.

What sets it apart

• True turn-based 5e combat. Initiative rolls, advantage/disadvantage, bonus actions — the tabletop ruleset is implemented with fidelity.
• Reactive storytelling. Almost every quest can be resolved through combat, dialogue, stealth, or unexpected lateral thinking. NPCs remember.
• Origin characters. Each companion has a full playable backstory; you can experience the game as Astarion the vampire spawn, Shadowheart the cleric of Shar, and others.
• Full cinematic dialogue. Every line is voiced and framed in cinematic camera angles — a rarity for the genre.

Reception

The game launched to near-universal acclaim, winning Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2023 along with awards for Best RPG, Best Performance, Best Community Support, and Player’s Voice.
