An RPG unlike any other
Released at the tail end of the Infinity Engine’s golden run, Planescape: Torment set aside dragons and dungeons for a stranger setting: Sigil, the City of Doors, perched at the center of the multiverse. You play the Nameless One — an immortal who wakes on a mortuary slab with no memory of his many past lives, hunted by a floating skull called Morte and pursued by the consequences of selves he can no longer remember.
What sets it apart
- Words over swords. Combat exists, but is almost entirely optional. Most encounters reward investigation, dialogue, and lateral thinking over violence.
- A setting like no other. Planescape’s philosophical, faction-driven cosmology is the engine of the story — belief shapes reality, and ideologies have power.
- One of gaming’s great scripts. Over 800,000 words, written by Chris Avellone and team. Many consider it the genre’s high-water mark for writing.
- Companions with weight. Each party member is a study in regret, faith, or transformation; their stories are inextricable from yours.
A cult classic, then a canon classic
Planescape: Torment was a modest commercial release in 1999 but grew into one of the most respected role-playing games ever made. The 2017 Enhanced Edition brought it to a new generation on modern platforms, including mobile and consoles.
